Overview

Brecciated Agate is agate (or jasper-agate) that was broken into angular fragments and then naturally re-cemented by later silica-rich solutions. The result is a mosaic-like stone of sharp-edged pieces held in a translucent to opaque chalcedony matrix, often with contrasting reds, browns, grays, and whites.

Formation & geology

Brecciated Agate forms in two stages. First, an existing body of agate or jasper is fractured - by tectonic stress, volcanic activity, or other earth movement - into angular fragments. Second, silica-bearing groundwater percolates through the shattered material and deposits new chalcedony as a cement, locking the broken pieces back together.

Iron oxides introduced during this process commonly tint the matrix red or brown, sharpening the contrast between fragments and cement. The stone is found in many agate and jasper districts worldwide, notably in volcanic regions where brittle silica deposits have been repeatedly fractured and re-healed.
