Overview

Garnet is not a single mineral but a group of closely related silicates sharing the same crystal structure but different chemistry. The common species include almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular, andradite, and uvarovite, which mix to form blends like rhodolite and malaia.

While deep red garnet is the classic and most familiar form, the group spans nearly every color, including vivid green tsavorite and demantoid, orange spessartine, and rare color-change varieties. Garnet is the birthstone for January.

Its good hardness, bright luster, and wide color range have made it a popular gem since ancient times, when red garnets adorned Egyptian, Roman, and medieval jewelry.

Formation & geology

Garnets form mainly in metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss, where heat and pressure create them from aluminum-rich sediments; almandine is the classic metamorphic garnet. Calcium garnets like grossular and andradite form in metamorphosed limestones (skarns).

Pyrope and some others form in igneous and mantle rocks, arriving at the surface in kimberlites and peridotites. Garnets are durable and resist weathering, so they accumulate in sands and gravels as detrital grains.

Major sources include India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Tanzania and Kenya (tsavorite), Namibia and Nigeria (spessartine), Russia (demantoid), and the United States.

How to identify it

Garnets are typically found as well-formed equant crystals, often the dodecahedral or trapezohedral "garnet" shapes, with a vitreous luster and no cleavage (they show conchoidal fracture). Hardness is 6.5-7.5.

Color alone is not diagnostic because of the wide range, but the crystal form, isotropic optical behavior (singly refractive), and high luster help. The streak is white.

Red garnet can resemble ruby or spinel, but garnet is singly refractive and softer than ruby; green garnet can resemble emerald or tourmaline, distinguished by optical and density tests. Refractive index and specific gravity help separate the garnet species.

Garnet is widely used in jewelry, from antique rose-cut red pieces to modern faceted tsavorite and spessartine. Demantoid and tsavorite green garnets are especially valuable, while red almandine and pyrope are affordable and abundant.
